Third Edition

Since the first edition of The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes publication, in 2001, it has done extremely well. The book has been adopted nationally, and internationally, in high schools, colleges, and universities as standard text and has also shown significant strength in the retail market for over a decade… and two distinctly different editions.

The 3rd edition of my book, The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes, is now underway. The second edition, at 660 pages, and 400 images, has been a great success and the book continues to be regarded as the definitive resource in the genre. My publisher, Delmar Cengage - NY, and editor, Jim Gish, have decided that it is time to begin production on the third edition.

This new edition will be a bit heavier and is projected to be over 800 pages and 500 images. It will feature new and adapted processes, a lot of new imagery, and profiles on the personal workflows of some of the artists who are leading the renaissance in contemporary alternative process photography.

As an example, the new wet plate collodion chapter will be over twice the length of the last edition and will incorporate results from several years worth of new testing, recipes, and trouble-shooting. There will also be new chapters on contemporary techniques such as Dick Sullivan's Athenatype and fumed silica pre-sensitizing. I am likely to include sample chapters in the "sample chapter" section on this site in the next few months.

I'm really looking forward to creating this edition and will keep you posted as we get close to publication. At the moment we are shooting for a 2013 publication date.
